Section of US41 Designated to Honor Sgt. Elio Diaz

September 5, 2025 – Port Charlotte, FL

A section of US41 will be officially designated as “Sgt. Elio Diaz Memorial Highway” at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on September 9.

Nine months after losing his life during a traffic stop at the Chevron Gas Station at US41 and Melbourne St., Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Elio Diaz will be honored permanently. The Board of County Commissioners will officially designate a section of highway as the “Sgt. Elio Diaz Memorial Highway”, extending from the site where he gave his life at Melbourne St. to Church St.

“This dedication means so much, as it represents a community that vows to never forget our brother. Here at CCSO, we still hear Elio’s laugh in the halls of our buildings and see his smile everywhere we go. I pray that Charlotte County remembers him as we do, and that those memories remind us all how much he loved serving his community. Elio will never be forgotten, and this stretch of highway – honoring him where he made the ultimate sacrifice – helps to ensure that.”

Sheriff Bill Prummell

On behalf of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, we thank everyone who helped make this possible as well as all of our community who have expressed their love for this great man, deputy, husband, and father.

Rest in glory, Sgt. Elio Diaz.
