On 08/29/2026, Major Crimes Detectives with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to an attempted suicide at the Charlotte County Jail.

During the investigation, detectives discovered at 11:32 AM, Charlotte County Corrections Deputies conducted a check on inmate Shawn Michael Schebel (1/29/1977) and there were no issues or concerns noted.

Fifteen minutes later, at 11:47 AM, two inmates and a Corrections Deputy in the pod removed Schebel from his cell. The Corrections Deputy requested medical assistance and immediately removed a string/fabric from Schebel’s neck and began lifesaving efforts. Jail Medical Staff and Charlotte County Fire/EMS arrived a short time later and eventually detected a pulse. Schebel was taken to Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte and is listed in critical condition at the time of this release.

Schebel was placed into custody at the Charlotte County Jail on July 20th, 2026 for Felony Violation of Probation for Battery 2nd and Subsequent Offense and has remained in the jail since that time.

This investigation remains ongoing.

“My thoughts are with this man and his loved ones today. Regardless of any charges he may have been facing, this is a human being with family and friends who care about him. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary challenge, and it affects more than just the individual. Please, if you or someone you know are struggling, ask for help. Trust me, people care – even people you may not expect to want to help you. You are not alone.”
