School Threats At Port Charlotte High School Determined To Be Swatting Calls

October 8, 2026 – Port Charlotte, FL

A message from Sheriff Prummell:

“We have been experiencing numerous Swatting calls recently and I wanted to take some time to explain the motives behind most calls received.

Swatting is a dangerous form of criminal harassment in which someone deliberately makes a false emergency report—often claiming that a serious crime, hostage situation, or violent threat is occurring at another person’s address. The goal is to cause a heavily armed police response to the victim’s home.

The primary goal of offenders committing swatting calls is to cause severe disruption, harassment, or retaliation against a specific target. Many offenders seek status, bragging rights, or infamy within toxic online subcultures, gaming communities, or hacking forums. Some perpetrators view the dangerous disruption as a form of dark entertainment, frequently watching the real-time fallout play out on live streams.

Offenders frequently receive acknowledgment and validation within these specialized online communities. In toxic hacking forums, private Discord servers, and Telegram channels, swatting is often treated as a twisted competitive sport where perpetrators earn notoriety, respect, and influence based on the chaos they cause.

How Clout and Acknowledgment Are Distributed

A keyway to reduce swatting is to remove the attention and recognition that offenders are seeking. You can address this in several ways:

If attention is the reward, reducing attention can reduce the incentive. The focus should be on protecting victims, holding offenders accountable, and educating the public—not giving perpetrators the recognition they may be seeking.”
