Woman Opens Fire on Vehicle at Public Park

April 2, 2026 – Port Charlotte, FL

A woman is behind bars after opening fire on a vehicle as it left the scene where a juvenile was attacked.

Around 4:30pm on Wednesday, April 1, deputies responded to a disturbance with shots fired at Lake Betty Park located at 2215 Conway Boulevard in Port Charlotte. Due to the nature of the call, Criminal Investigations was called out to take over the investigation.

Through investigation, detectives found that three juvenile males were involved in an altercation, resulting in one of the juvenile males receiving minor injuries. During the altercation, one of the juveniles called Lakeshia Taylor (10/12/1982), and advised her what was happening. Taylor then drove to the park and observed several juveniles leaving the park in a vehicle while the juvenile who called her remained on the ground. Taylor then brandished a firearm and fired at the vehicle as it attempted to flee the parking lot.

Deputies detained Taylor and questioned her about the incident, at which time she admitted to firing three rounds at the vehicle, which she stated was intended to stop it from leaving.

There were several poor decisions made in this situation, and we are fortunate that this did not become deadly. Regardless of the reason for the juveniles to have been fighting, they need to learn how to manage their emotions and walk away. The call made by the juvenile should have been to 911, which would have resulted in my deputies arriving quickly and preventing a lot of this mess. Lastly, discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle is not only a dangerous crime, but to do it at a public park is even more reckless. There is no excuse for endangering the lives of innocent people.”

Sheriff Bill Prummell

The victim’s vehicle was located, and detectives found two rounds had struck the vehicle: one in the driver’s side door and the other in the rear hatch. At the time of the shooting, four occupants were inside. Taylor was arrested and booked into the Charlotte County Jail for discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. At the time of this report, she is being held without bond.
