Junior Law Academy Opens Registration

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has opened up registration for the Junior Law Academy Summer Camp. The camp is open to middle school students (ages 11-14), and this will be the program’s 6th summer in operation.

The Junior Law Academy is designed to give young people the opportunity to learn about the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, its operations, and to demonstrate the benefits of law enforcement and community policing in our county. During the course of the two-week program, school resource officers and other members of the Sheriff’s Office interact with the students, soliciting their feedback and ideas through discussion of relevant issues.

The summer camp will run for two weeks from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  Four separate camps are offered through the summer break; 06/04/18 – 06/15/18,  6/18/18 – 06/29/18, 07/09/18 – 07/20/18, and 07/23/18 – 08/03/2018.

The camp will be based out of Port Charlotte High School for classroom presentations and the students will be taking field trips to tour different divisions of the sheriff’s office including the Charlotte County Jail, Charlotte County Courthouse, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit.

It is the intention of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the functions and responsibilities of providing law enforcement services in Charlotte County.

The fee per child is $125.00 for the two weeks, which covers the cost of two t-shirts and field trips, such as a pool party, a trip out to Don Pedro Island, bowling, movies, roller skating, and a trip to Jump and Fun in Sarasota.  We can accommodate 25 students for each camp.

To register, please have your child make contact with their school resource officer for the paperwork.

If you would like to become a community partner and sponsor a child for this program please contact DFC David W. Sonne, School Resource Officer, Lemon Bay High School, at 474-7702 Ext. 3006 or e-mail david.sonne@ccso.org.
