Death Investigation at the Charlotte County Jail – Update

Investigators have located and notified the next of kin for the inmate who was found deceased in his cell on Wednesday evening at the Charlotte County Jail. The inmate’s name is David Todd Griggs (5/3/1964).

David Griggs entered the Charlotte County Jail on September 22, 2018, after an arrest for active warrants and drug possession.

On September 26th, at approximately 5:00pm, David Griggs was observed by staff awake in his cell. At 5:15pm he was found unresponsive with a piece of material tied around his neck. Detention officers, medical staff, and Charlotte County EMS performed life saving measures. He was declared deceased at 5:48pm.

Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit conducted interviews with Detention Officers, medical staff and inmates that were present in the pod at the time Griggs was observed unresponsive. No one who had contact with Griggs during his confinement at the jail recalled him making any statements that he intended to harm himself, nor did he exhibit any unusual or concerning behavior.

This afternoon, the Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on David Griggs and determined the cause of death to be suicide – asphyxiation.

The State Attorney’s Office will conduct a case review of the completed report.
