Honoring the fallen heroes

On Monday, May 31, we celebrate Memorial Day.

This day is reserved to honor the fallen heroes who served in the armed forces, paying the ultimate price to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. Their selfless acts should never be taken for granted.

I’d like to also recognize the countless people who are survived by these incredible individuals; the spouses, parents, children, siblings, and friends who supported that person’s choice to serve our country. What you have endured cannot be overstated.

John F. Kennedy said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” This means that we must live in such a way that honors their sacrifice, to give it meaning. It is up to each of us to be that kind of citizen.

So, this weekend, let us not forget the reason for the holiday. Let us toast to those we have lost, and to those who have lost someone dear to them through service to this beautiful country, as we gather in a celebration of freedom… because that is exactly what they gave their lives for.
