Don’t be the driving force behind traffic accidents, a letter from Sheriff Bill Prummell

Charlotte County, FL- August 27, 2021

From the desk of Sheriff Bill Prummell

Meetings, doctor appointments, back to school routines and the everyday hustle and bustle of day-to-day life can be stressful. Especially if you throw running late into the mix. But, there is never a good reason to drive distracted.

Distracted driving is not just texting or talking on your cell phone. Distracted driving can include anything that takes your attention off driving, like eating, reaching behind you to grab something, or even daydreaming. You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention.

Locally, we have seen a dramatic increase in preventable accidents with the root case being distracted driving. For example, so far in the month of July, there has been an increase of 150% in the number of distracted driving crashes from 2020, to 2021.

It takes every single driver to commit to driving safely, and do so, every single time to keep our roadways safe. What can you do to help? Practice safe driving when you’re behind the wheel. As a passenger, don’t be timid to speak up when the driver of the vehicle is driving distracted. Speak up, and save a life.

An accident can happen in a moment. Don’t take your eyes off the road or hands off the wheel for even a moment.

“Don’t be the driving force behind traffic accidents.”
