CLICK IT OR TICKET is happening NOW!
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers about the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seat belt this spring, during the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) national Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs from May 23 to June 5, 2022.
State and local law enforcement agencies across the country will be issuing tickets to drivers who choose not to buckle up. Special enforcement and educational efforts will begin May 23 throughout Charlotte County with the goal of reminding drivers and passengers that seat belts save lives.
Did you know that in 2020, more than half of all young adults ages 18 to 34 killed in crashes were completely unrestrained? Men make up the majority of those killed in crashes, representing 67% of all passenger vehicle occupant deaths in 2020. Data show 55% of men killed in crashes were unrestrained, compared to 43% of women killed in crashes. (NHTSA)
“By wearing your seat belt, you are choosing to travel safely. This campaign is about saving lives and setting examples for those who may not know any better. Our children watch the actions of those around them. Let’s teach our youth that seat belts save lives,” says Sheriff Prummell.
In Charlotte County, the maximum penalty for a seat belt violation is $113.00. However, child restraint violations (infant through 5 years of age) are considered moving violations that come with a fine of $163 and 3 points on your license.
