Suspect in Matecumbe Rd. Homicide Arrested

February 15, 2024 – Englewood, FL

After an investigation that lasted seven weeks, the grandson of a homicide victim has been arrested and charged with his murder.

At 5:15am on December 28, 2023, Charlotte County deputies responded to 8432 Matecumbe Rd., in the South Gulf Cove community near Englewood, after receiving a call stating a man had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased male with a gunshot wound in the front of the residence. The male was identified as James S. Khoury (01/21/1952).

The scene was secured, and an investigation began. The Major Case Unit, with the assistance of the Emergency Response Team, Crime Scene Technicians, Aviation, the Criminal Investigations Unit, and Patrol deputies, scoured the scene for evidence. The evidence found at the scene determined that the weapon used to kill Mr. Khoury had been a rifle.

Despite no known witnesses or security camera footage, detectives were able to develop and follow several leads. As the investigation progressed, the victim’s grandson, Joshua Nareau (04/11/2000) was developed as a person of interest. Nareau was also on scene at the time deputies first arrived to the home.

Pieces of evidence found at the scene, collected during the execution of search warrants, were sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for testing. This evidence, along with other investigative techniques, enabled detectives to establish probable cause for the arrest of Nareau.

On February 15, 2024, Nareau was taken into custody on one count of second-degree murder and transported to the Charlotte County Jail.

“I am glad to finally be able to bring an update to you on this terrible incident. As you can see, even though we were not able to share much with you, my detectives and forensics team did a great job and we had a direction for the investigation and ultimately got the person responsible. This does not make it any easier for the family of the victim, who now have even more grief to cope with, but I hope it brings peace of mind to the community once more. Please pray for Mr. Khoury’s family as they navigate this unthinkable situation.”
