At approximately 9:30am on Saturday, May 25, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Pulaski Street in Port Charlotte in reference to a young child that had sustained a gunshot wound. Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are still investigating the incident, but it appears at this time that the shooting was accidental. A parent was home at the time and is cooperating with the investigation.
The child that was shot was transported for treatment with a non-life-threatening injury and is expected to survive. At the time of this report, DCF has been contacted and a search warrant has been signed by the State Attorney’s Office to enable detectives to further their investigation. No additional details are available at this time.
“This is a terrible incident, but I am thankful that the injury is not life-threatening. As my detectives continue to investigate, I want to remind all gun owners in Charlotte County to double and triple check that your firearms are stored safely, especially if there are children in the home. Let’s all do our part to protect our vulnerable ones.”
