Death Investigation at the Charlotte County Jail

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate tonight at the Charlotte County Jail. The inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at 5:15pm after last being checked at approximately 5:00pm.

His cell was in a lockdown pod, in which inmates have no contact with each other. At 5:15pm he was observed unresponsive with a piece of material tied around his neck. Detention Officers, Jail Medical Staff, and responding Charlotte County EMS performed life saving measures. He was declared deceased at 5:48pm.

At this time, we are unable to locate next of kin, so we cannot release his information. Understanding that family of other inmates will be concerned about their loved one, we have established a phone line for family to call and confirm the status of their incarcerated family member if they match the information provided. The deceased is a white male in his 50’s. The number to call to check on your family member’s status, if they match that demographic, is 941-833-6357.

Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are on scene and conducting an investigation. Further information will be available after the Medical Examiner completes their report.
