Passenger initiates gunfire during routine traffic stop

Around 2:30 this morning deputies conducted a routine traffic stop in the parking lot of Hooters on Tamiami Trail/ Veterans. The passenger of the vehicle immediately fired shots towards the deputies who then returned fire.

We can confirm our deputies are safe. However, the suspect has unfortunately passed from his injuries.

More updates to follow.

  1. Tragic altough it may be — thank goodness the officers were quick enough in response it prevent any of them from being injured. Every single car, house, business or other venue that the officers are called to represents a possible dangerous situation. Training and experience are the keys to an officers ability to make instant informed decisions that can save their own lives or the lives and property of others. We are very fortunate to have officers who are both well trained and experienced in our CCSO. Thank you for recognizing and dealing properly and quickly with a situation that could have rapidly escalated and exposed many more to potential danger.
