From the Desk of Sheriff Prummell

In light of the recent school threats, I want to assure everyone in Charlotte County that the CCSO takes any threat to our schools extremely serious. We will do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of our children, teachers, and school staff.

My staff will always respond quickly and appropriately to get the facts right and apprehend the person(s) responsible.  Threats to our schools via telephone, text message, Snap Chat or the like, are serious, and come with consequences.

My deputies are well-trained and equipped with the skills and resources necessary – but it is my hope that they don’t have to use them. With school resource officers in each public school within Charlotte County, I’m confident our schools are safer than ever before.

School Resource Officers have many responsibilities. From the protection and safety being the most obvious, to delivering instruction on topical issues such as drug prevention and internet safety to students. Undoubtedly, School Resource Officers play a large role in the day-to-day functions within the school day. Not only does the safety and protection of teachers and students fall on them, but they pride themselves on building relationships with the youth of Charlotte County. They read to them, talk with them, and they really get to know them.   The students trust them and ask for help with problems they may be having at school, or at home. This relationship promotes open communication and diversifies student perception of the typical cop. Ultimately, it’s a method of community policing and crime prevention geared towards our youth.

I want to remind everyone to report anything that could potentially jeopardize school safety to the CCSO or the School Resource Officer on-site. It’s up to all of us to keep our schools safe.

In an emergency dial 9-1-1.
