New Legislation Puts Spotlight on Florida’s Mental Health

June 25, 2025 – Tallahassee, FL

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed two new bills into Florida law aimed at improving the state’s mental health services, with Sheriff Bill Prummell being a driving force in both.

The first bill, the Tristin Murphy Act, was named for a man in the Florida prison system who tragically took his own life while serving his sentence. Sheriff Prummell worked with Murphy’s family, as his original incarceration occurred at the Charlotte County Jail, as well as Senator Benjamin Albritton and Senator Jennifer Bradley, to draft and pass this critical legislation.

The second bill, the Key Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Legislation, focuses on strengthening Florida’s Mental Health Act by codifying recommendations made by Florida’s Commission on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders. Sheriff Prummell was appointed by Governor DeSantis to serve on and chair this commission back in 2021.

“I am honored and humbled to have been involved in the creation of this new legislation, and I truly believe that it will help save lives and provide better services to people in Florida who are struggling with mental health issues. We have come a long way as a state in these matters, but there is still much work to be done. I look forward to seeing what else we can accomplish together. Be strong. Be safe. And never quit!”
