On May 18, 2023, the Charlotte County Jail underwent its annual Florida Model Jail Standards Inspection.
The Florida Model Jail Standards are minimum standards that jails across Florida must meet to ensure the constitutional rights of those incarcerated are upheld. Prior to 1996, the Florida Department of Corrections was responsible for the standards and inspection process for local county jails. Legislation was passed in 1996 that gave the authority of inspections to the local level.
This change required the Florida Sheriffs Association and Florida Association of Counties to appoint individuals to serve on a Committee that would govern standards for which local jails must comply. This year, the inspection team included members from Highlands County, DeSoto County, Hendry County, Okeechobee County, and Hardee County.
During the course of the inspection, the facility was found to be in compliance for both medical and security/operations.
These inspections are vital to ensuring the proper procedures are followed and the safety of everyone, including my staff, is considered. I am proud of my Corrections staff for the work that they do to provide custody, control, and care for the detainees.
